Speed tests

One of the things I was a little concerned about regarding our recent move was that we’d no longer be in a cabled area. We’d been rather enjoying the rock-solid performance of cable, in comparison to the unpredictable nature of ADSL2+. Here’s what we were getting in Loughborough on cable:

Not to worry really. It turns out that we’ve moved into an area that’s enabled for Fibre to the Cabinet, that is, fibre optic cabling to a box on the street near the house, with conventional phone lines the rest of the way. This is what BT have been marketing as “Infinity” – and it turns out it’s pretty good:

As well as having fibre optic most of the way to the house, BT also install a new faceplate on your master phone socket which isolates the home phone wiring completely from the broadband connection. The only downside is that this means having an engineer come out to set up the service.

In practice, so far it seems to be easily matching the performance of the cable connection we had before. Excellent 🙂
